Sowing Seeds into the Midlands (Seeds) disrupts the school-to-prison pipeline through advocacy, education, and direct services, fostering an environment for Midlands youth to rest, reflect, and reclaim their futures.
Based in Columbia, South Carolina, Seeds is a grassroots non-profit committed to supporting youth ages 13–18 as they become. We offer support services and tailored programming grounded in restorative justice practices to help teens make informed decisions that benefit the futures they imagine for themselves. From practical life skills that support sustainable living practices to safe sex education and self-assuredness, we create brave spaces for teens to build accountability, heal, and identify the tools necessary to engage authentically and respectfully with themselves and the world around them.
Since our founding, Sowing Seeds into the Midlands has been a pillar of support for justice-involved youth, offering restorative pathways to healing, self-awareness, accountability, and liberation. By combining advocacy with restorative, community-centered direct services, we have helped reduce recidivism, increase access to essential resources, and strengthen intergenerational community bonds. Our holistic approach ensures that Midlands youth are not just surviving but are supported in repairing harm, rebuilding trust, and thriving in environments that uplift and sustain them.
Rooted in cultural competence, sustainability, and restorative justice, we stand beside young people and their families, centering relationship, repair, and collective care to ensure they have the support and opportunities needed to build brighter, more just, and aligned futures.

Good Ground is the foundational gardening bed for programs that center sustainability, environmental justice, and food justice for Sowing Seeds into the Midlands. Good Ground brings together projects that restore land while strengthening communities and creating meaningful opportunities for youth and volunteers to contribute to nurturing their environment. Good Ground houses three primary initiatives: Skylar’s Garden, RePowering the Ride, and Rise & Recover Disaster Relief.

A memorial garden dedicated to a former seeds member, Skylar’s Garden is a restorative community garden that serves as a brave and welcoming space for young people to connect with the land while learning about food access, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. The garden provides hands-on learning experiences where youth help grow food, maintain garden beds, and participate in projects that promote healthy communities and environmental responsibility. Skylar’s Garden is particularly meaningful for youth who benefit from supportive environments that encourage growth, patience, teamwork, and confidence.
Through gardening and shared stewardship of the land, participants learn that caring for the earth and caring for one another are deeply connected. Youth who participate in Skylar’s Garden are able to earn community service hours through their participation, creating opportunities for young people to fulfill school, court, or program requirements while contributing to meaningful community work.

RePowering the Ride is a collaborative initiative led by the South Carolina Energy Justice Coalition (SCEJC) that focuses on sustainability, mobility, and community access. This youth led campaign to investigate and promote clean transportation and energy equity was appropriately named Repowering the Ride. This work focused on educating communities about the environmental and health impacts of transportation pollution, particularly in Black, rural, and low-wealth areas. Through community listening sessions, educational forums, and legislative advocacy, the campaign amplified voices often left out of energy decisions and pushed for policies that support electric school buses, improved public transit, and clean air. Our work contributed to the conversation about shifting our school districts to clean transportation and benefits the communities most impacted by environmental injustice.

Rise & Recover is a collaborative disaster relief initiative led by the South Carolina Energy Justice Coalition (SCEJC) that focuses on supporting communities impacted by natural disasters. The initiative engages local youth in hands-on recovery efforts such as cleanup, debris removal, and assisting with minor repair tasks. Through their participation, young people can earn community service hours and stipends that may be applied toward court-ordered restitution, creating opportunities for justice-involved youth to contribute positively to their communities while addressing legal obligations.
Sowing Seeds into the Midlands also trained Community Caregivers who supported impacted households by helping residents navigate recovery resources, including FEMA applications, while serving as trusted adults who helped guide and support youth volunteers throughout the project.
Learning & Liberation: This program creates opportunities for education, skill-building, and restorative experiences, ensuring that youth have access to learning environments that nurture both their intellectual and emotional growth. Projects under this initiative include:

A literacy-focused summer program designed for elementary school students, fostering a love of reading, critical thinking, and self-expression through engaging activities and culturally affirming storytelling.

A summer enrichment program providing workshops, mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities to equip youth with personal and professional skills.

Addressing root causes of violence through conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and community-led safety strategies. Seeds Guardians provide justice-involved youth with meaningful opportunities to heal, grow, and reintegrate into their communities. The program also fosters intergenerational healing by connecting youth with adults who have overcome similar circumstances, creating a network of mentorship, support, and shared wisdom. By bridging generations through lived experience, Seeds Reclaimers strengthens community ties and ensures that both young people and adults are equipped with the support and resources to break cycles of harm and build a foundation for lasting transformation.

While it's no secret that we're champions for fun and games, we're also heavy advocates for the serious work -- the decriminalization of adolescence. Our work with policymakers aims to reform a broken youth criminal justice system on both state and federal levels.
